Professor Janet Naughton lectures on sculptor Augusta Savage, including her childhood growing up in Green Cove Springs and West Palm Beach, Florida and her transition to Harlem, New York, where she was a key figure in the Harlem Renaissance movement. Savage studied at the Cooper Institute, studied in Paris, France with a Fellowship from the Julius Rosenwald Fund, taught at the Harlem YMCA under the Works Progress Administration, and exhibited her 18" sculpture, The Harp, based on James Weldon Johnson and Rosalie Johnson's "Lift Every Voice and Sing" song at the 1939 New York World's Fair. Savage was the first American woman to open and operate her own Art School. She died in relative obscurity in 1962. Janet DeVries Naughton and Ginger Pedersen are committed to see a replica of Savage's sculpture "The Harp," recreated in Savage's hometown of West Palm Beach.
